Meteor
July 25, 2006
Last
evening I saw the brightest meteor I have ever seen. I was with Jim and
Kai at the east side of 29 Palms. We had heard on Z107.7 radio that we
could view the Hubble telescope in the southern sky. A minute or so
before the Hubble Telescope was due to appear we saw an amazingly
bright meteor traveling across the southern sky from east to west. It
flared brightly for up to one second, maybe as brightly as the full
moon, or so it seemed anyway. Jim, Kai, and I all saw it clearly. Both
Kai and I said that it was the brightest meteor we had ever seen. Jim
said that he had seen one that bright once before. Jim thought that
most meteors were pebbles about the size of peas, but this meteor was
maybe the size of a golf ball. We all thought that seeing the meteor
was the experience of a lifetime. I wonder if anyone else saw the
meteor last evening. Within a couple of minutes we then observed the
Hubble Telescope traveling from west to east. A real double-featured
treat. When Gary gives you tips on Z107.7 local news, you never know
what you are in for.
For Z107.7, I’m reporter Ken Drummond.
Well, they didn't use this story. In fact, nobody seemed interested. But we know what we saw and it was pretty cool.
